|
|
| :?: I would like to use a piece of 6" round Terra Cotta flue pipe to carry a 3" insulated pellet stove pipe through a frame wall. I was thinking of running the pellet stove pipe through the center and using ceramic wool insulation around the pellet stove pipe to keep in in the center of the terra cotta pipe. does this sound reasonable for a frame wall? I can't use a regular pellet stove thimble as the wall is about 16" thick. |

I would be hesitant to rely on a single wall terra cotta round flue for a pellet stove mostly due to the really high heat that pellet stoves generates. Ene with the ceramic wool around the stove pipe since the qool will actually defect some of the insulating value by reducing air flow between the layers of flue.
Would you have enough room to use a triple wall pipe similar to those used by fireplace inserts?
I would suggest calling the stove manufactirer and getting their take on it. They will typically be happy to talk with consumers even if the stove is not new.

| Thank you for responding. I didn't want to use the terra cotta as the only pipe. I wanted to use the terra cotta as an outer pipe, line it with ceramic wool insulation & then run the 3" insulated pellet stove pipe through the center of all that. Yes I can use double or triple wall to get through the wall and then run the 3" insulated pellet stove pipe through the center. I have the room. |

The triple wall pipe operates on the basis of air passages around each layer of pipe which allows cooling. Due to this I would recemmend using that-there are also a variety of thimbles made for these flue systems-
